Ashgabat Airport: Arrivals, Visa on Arrival, and Getting into the City
Step-by-step guide to arriving at Ashgabat International Airport (ASB): visa on arrival with pre-approved LOI, exact costs, customs rules, and how to get to your hotel. Updated 2026.

Ashgabat International Airport (ASB) is Turkmenistan's main international entry point. The terminal opened in 2016 and is shaped like a white falcon. It is clean, modern, and larger than the passenger numbers would suggest. As a licensed tour operator, we arrange LOIs and airport pickups for all our clients, this guide is based on the arrivals process our groups go through regularly. It covers what to expect from landing to reaching your hotel: the visa process, costs, customs, and transport into the city.
What you need before you board
You cannot board a flight to Ashgabat without a confirmed Letter of Invitation (LOI) and visa. The visa is either stamped at a Turkmenistan embassy before you travel, or collected at the airport on arrival if your LOI has been pre-approved. Airlines check this at check-in and will not let you board without it.
We issue LOIs for every tour we arrange. Standard processing takes 10-14 working days; express is 3-7 working days. Since 2025 you can submit the LOI application up to six months before your travel date.
Airlines and routes into ASB
Turkmenistan Airlines operates most routes. flydubai serves Dubai daily and China Southern runs Urumqi twice a week. Istanbul is the highest-frequency connection at 3-5 flights per day and the most practical transit point for travellers coming from the Americas or Africa.

The arrivals process, step by step
Budget 60-90 minutes from touchdown to leaving the terminal. There are more steps than a typical airport, but the layout is logical and signs are in English.
- Follow signs to passport control. One corridor from the gate leads to the immigration area.
- COVID test. All arriving passengers are required to take a COVID test at the airport. Cost: $30 USD cash.
- Visa desk (only if collecting your visa on arrival). Show your passport and LOI approval reference. The officer stamps your visa. Cost varies by nationality: most EU citizens pay $65, Russians $150, others $55-$150. Notes must be USD, issued after 2008, with no tears or writing on them.
- Bank counter. Pay the immigration fee ($10) and bank processing fee ($5) here in USD cash. Keep the receipt.
- Passport control. Have your passport, visa, and LOI ready. Officers may ask basic questions about your accommodation and itinerary. Your operator will have submitted these details as part of the LOI.
- Baggage claim. Carousels are marked by flight. Trolleys are free.
- Customs. Fill in the declaration form before reaching the desk. Details below.
- Arrivals hall. Your guide will be waiting with a name sign. All of our private tours include airport pickup as standard.
What to bring in cash
All airport fees are paid in USD cash. Cards are not accepted at the visa desk, immigration counter, or bank window. Bring clean, undamaged notes issued after 2008.
| Fee | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| COVID test | $30 | Required for all arrivals as of 2026 |
| Visa on arrival | $55-$150 | Most EU citizens $65, Russians $150. Easier option. |
| Visa via embassy | ~$35 | Cheaper but requires visiting a Turkmenistan embassy in advance |
| Immigration fee | $10 | Paid at the bank counter |
| Bank processing fee | $5 | Paid at the bank counter alongside immigration fee |
| Tourist tax | $2 per day | Usually included in your tour package |
If you get your visa on arrival, budget around $115-$195 total at the airport (COVID test + visa + fees). If your visa was issued at an embassy beforehand, you only pay the COVID test and the $15 in counter fees on arrival.
Customs: what to declare
You fill in a customs declaration form on both arrival and departure. Keep the arrival copy as officers check it against your departure form.
Declare: cash over $10,000 USD, cameras and video equipment, laptops and tablets, prescription medications in large quantities. Drones need a separate import permit arranged before travel and cannot be brought in without one. Alcohol limit is 2 litres per person. Bags go through an X-ray and officers may check electronics. It is a routine process.
Police registration
All foreign visitors staying more than three days must be registered with the police. If you are on a tour, your operator handles this for you, it is submitted as part of the hotel check-in process and you do not need to visit any office. If you are staying independently at a private address, the host is responsible for registering you within three days of arrival.
Getting from the airport to the city
The airport is about 10 km from central Ashgabat, roughly 15-25 minutes by car.
Tour transfer: Included in all our tours. Your guide takes you directly to the hotel from arrivals.
Taxi: Taxis wait outside arrivals. Agree on a price before getting in as there are no meters. Central Ashgabat should cost 40-60 TMT, which is around $10-15 USD at the official rate.
Hotel transfer: Some hotels offer pre-booked airport transfers. Arrange this in advance if you are not on a tour.
Public bus: No direct bus runs between the airport and the city centre. Once you are in the city, buses are cheap and well-organised at 0.50 TMT per ride. The Ashgabat bus map covers all routes and works offline.
Leaving Turkmenistan
Check in at least 3 hours before your international flight. Security takes time. Buy any souvenirs before going to the airport as the selection inside is limited. Spend your remaining manat in the city since Turkmen manat cannot be exchanged abroad and there is no currency exchange airside. Fill in the departure customs form and make sure it matches what you declared on arrival, especially for cash and electronics.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a COVID test to enter Turkmenistan in 2026?
Yes. As of 2026, all arriving passengers are required to take a COVID test at the airport on arrival. Cost is $30 USD cash. This applies regardless of nationality or vaccination status.
Can I get a visa on arrival at Ashgabat Airport?
Yes, if your LOI has been pre-approved before you travel. Without a confirmed LOI from a licensed operator, you cannot collect a visa on arrival and airlines will not let you board your flight to Ashgabat. We issue LOIs for every tour we arrange.
Can I pay by card at the airport?
No. All airport fees (COVID test, visa, immigration counter, bank window) are cash only in USD. Bring clean, undamaged notes issued after 2008. There is no ATM airside that dispenses USD.
How long does the arrivals process take at Ashgabat Airport?
Budget 60-90 minutes from touchdown to leaving the terminal. The process has more steps than a typical European airport (COVID test, visa desk, bank counter, passport control, customs) but the layout is logical and staff move passengers through steadily.
Will my guide meet me at the airport?
Yes. All of our private tours include airport pickup as standard. Your guide will wait in the arrivals hall with a name sign. If your flight is delayed, we track the schedule and adjust the pickup time accordingly.
Sort your LOI before you book flights
Get your LOI confirmed before purchasing any flights. We handle this for every booking and can advise on whether to get your visa at an embassy or collect it at the airport.
Browse our private tour packages to start the process, or read about the LOI and visa for the full details. Once you are in the city, the Ashgabat travel guide covers sights, transport, and practical tips.
