The State Circus of Turkmenistan in Ashgabat is one of the most enjoyable evenings you can have in the city. Performances are professional, tickets are cheap by any international standard, and the audience is almost entirely local. If you are looking for something to do in Ashgabat that gets you out of the monuments and into a room full of Turkmen families, the circus is the best option in the city.

About the State Circus

The State Circus of Turkmenistan is a full-scale professional circus: acrobats, clowns, animal acts, aerial performers, trained horses, and a 20-piece live orchestra. The building was constructed between 1979 and 1984 and fully renovated and reopened in 2010. It seats 1,500 people across 10 sections and the circular arena is 13 metres in diameter. Performances draw a genuine local crowd, and the atmosphere inside is lively and informal. It is not a tourist attraction in the conventional sense, it is a place locals actually go.

The headline act is the Galkynysh national equestrian group, whose horseback performers have won the top prize at the Monte Carlo International Circus Festival six times. Seeing them perform in their home city, rather than on an international stage, is a genuine privilege.

In summer the circus is particularly popular. The heat keeps people indoors during the day, and an evening at the circus is one of the main things families do for entertainment. Expect a full house and a lot of children in the summer months.

Location

The State Circus is located in front of the Ak Altyn Hotel in Ashgabat. If you are staying at or near the Ak Altyn, it is within easy walking distance. Your guide can point you in the right direction from anywhere in the city centre.

Tickets

Tickets are bought at the ticket booth at the circus. The booth is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00, with a break from 13:00 to 14:00. The circus is closed on Mondays. Shows currently run on Saturdays and Sundays at 19:00, though the schedule changes by season.

The circus sells out regularly, particularly in summer and on weekends. If you are booked through us and want to attend a show, we can reserve tickets for you in advance. Ask in the booking chat and we will also confirm whether there is a suitable performance during your dates, as programs change. Do not leave it until the evening of the show and assume tickets will be available.

No Guide Needed in Ashgabat

Ashgabat is the one place in Turkmenistan where you do not need your guide by your side. The city is easy to navigate on foot and the circus is a perfect self-directed evening activity, whether that is after a long day of sightseeing or on a free night in your itinerary. Head to the ticket booth, buy your seat, and enjoy the show entirely on your own terms. Other good options for independent time in Ashgabat include an evening walk along the main fountain boulevard, browsing the Russian Bazaar, or simply sitting in one of the parks and watching the city go by. The circus fits naturally into all of this as a standalone evening out.
